On Wednesday, October 4, 2023, ACT for Conflict Resolution organized mock mediation and arbitration sessions at the Ramallah and Al-Bireh Chambers of Commerce and Industry. This event was part of a project aimed at promoting the role of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms in Jerusalem. The project was carried out in partnership with the Ministry of Justice and received support from the Suwaysiyah Program.

The opening session of this event was attended by several notable figures, including:

Mr. Abdul-Ghani Al-Atari is Chairman of the Ramallah and Al-Bireh Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

Ms. Maisa Hamarash is the Director-General of the General Administration of Alternative Dispute Resolution Mechanisms at the Ministry of Justice.

Mr. Mamoun Attili is a representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Dr. Mahmoud Abu Sawi is the Secretary-General of the ACT for Conflict Resolution.

During the opening session, the importance of this activity was highlighted, particularly its role in promoting the culture of mediation and arbitration. Through the simulation of real cases and disputes, the event aimed to provide a practical demonstration of how mediation and arbitration procedures are applied.

The event comprised two main sessions:

Mock Mediation Session:

Mediators: Mr. Mohammed Hadiya and Ms. May Abu Ghazala.

Parties to the dispute: Ms. Bushra Al-Qasrawi (buyer) and Mr. Abbas Aqel (exhibition).

The session focused on a dispute involving a multi-purpose piece of furniture and proceeded with an opening statement, a mediation agreement, individual sessions for each party, and a joint session. Ultimately, the parties reached a solution and signed a settlement agreement.

Mock Arbitration Hearing:

Arbitration panel: Dr. Mohammed Abu Arimelah (Chairman), Dr. Essam Tamimi, and Mr. Bilal Mahfouz (members).

Parties to the dispute: Ms. Hiba Douqan and Dr. Diana Faour

This session involved arbitration to resolve a disagreement over a construction contract, rights to commercial premises and roofs in a building, and accounting matters. The arbitration panel was formed, the arbitration agreement was signed, and the proceedings followed a structured process. The arbitration panel deliberated and issued a decision that resolved the dispute.

The event attracted a diverse audience, including lawyers, engineers, arbitrators, mediators, and individuals interested in the field of alternative dispute resolution.

This activity was a collaborative effort between ACT, a leading institution in conflict resolution, the Mediation and Arbitration Center affiliated with the Ramallah and Al-Bireh Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Ministry of Justice. It aimed to enhance cooperation among various sectors involved in preventing and resolving disputes, including the government, the private sector, and civil society.
